Quality
A major concern with the growing use of biofuels is related to
quality. The technical specifications for biodiesel are listed here.
A useful paper on quality is linked here.
A couple of concerns for those seeking to make their own:
Un-reacted glycerin from the chemical process can cause check engine
lights. (CEL) This has happened in Canada, USA and Europe. Recently
in Ottawa, Topia energy developed a new glycerin standard in response
to a CEL issue in Toronto.
In addition, water in fuel can have an adverse effect on your engine’s
operation. Biodiesel must be stored properly to ensure no water
infiltration.
Ideally energy companies would publish their testing and certification
process (scroll down to certification on left hand side). If
they do not, take the time to get informed about the fuel you are
using. How is it made? How is it tested?
